ESEA@home

ESEA@home introduction

The ESEA (Earth Space Exploration Agency) team is proud to announce the forthcoming ESEA@home. ESEA@home will be a BOINC based project with several main goals. First goal is to attempt to create a viable distributed statistics calculation for BOINC. As statistics are one of the major things that drive volunteer computing, and statistics are becoming an intense computing job with the growing number of projects and data to process, it is becomming increasingly important to get access to large computing power.

Second goal is to provide a service for excisting and potential BOINC project participants, helping them to choose which existing projects best suits their hardware, determining if their hardware meets the needs of the projects of their choice, and measuring performance of hardware combinations.

Third goal is to develope a common framework for establishing and running short term distributed computing projects fast and easy, and host such projects. Some projects have a life time shorter than the efford of even establishing those projects which make them never get off the ground. By eliminating a part of the establishment effords, and having an established user base, these projects should have a good foundation to build on, and get work done faster. They don't need to learn BOINC, the applications whould be BOINC compatible from the get go, and they won't have to spend time building a user base to perform the computations - time that might even be longer than the time span of the project itself.

Fourth goal is to provide project hosting for long term projects with the benefits mentioned for the third goal, but with the more specialized customizing needed for long term projects.

Update August 8th

07 Aug 2008, 22:41 (UTC)

Progress news

The first test programs gave alot of good results, so I have started on creating the programs that will pre-process the xml-files and create wu-files. It will not take long before you will be able to see some results of my work - figured some might be interested in stats on this, so why not provide it. Not all stats require boinc processing, some get available during the pre-processing.

Development update

06 Jun 2008, 18:11 (UTC)

Progress news

I expect to start building some preliminary test programs this weekend. The test programs will help me gettings some things right, such as filesplitting, wu creation, the project application and progress times. I do not expect to get any of them finished, just starting on them, but that would be a huge step forward in the progress of ESEA@home.

Update: Server and BOINC server

26 Feb 2008, 09:30 (UTC)

Progress news

Just to keep you updated I can tell you that several parts for the server has been purchased. I have approx. 1/3 of it by now. And I have decided to go with BOINC virtual server, at least for the first test stages. That way I will have easier and faster way to learn how things should be set up, and it will probably perform just as well as what I already had planned.

Delay with benifits

11 Dec 2007, 21:27 (UTC)

Progress news

As I am already busy with various things, I have decided to delay this project until further notice. I have already decided to build a server, which this project will benifit from, so there is no point in setting things up now, when they are going to be moved anyway.

Update on progress

29 Oct 2007, 22:12 (UTC)

Progress news

Currently progress is a bit slow. I just got a new job, and I am still settling in. This only means it will take a while longer before I get working setting up the server side of BOINC - but it also means I get ideas for solutions for the stats project. I hope to have more info at this site within this week. I am also trying out Smarty - maybe I will use that on BOINC.

For the curious

Progress news

One thing people always want to know is if there is work on a regular basis. For the test phases, at least, of the stats project there will be plenty of work. I have been gathering stats data since some time 2005 - more than two years worth of data to date - and I see the test phases as a perfect opportunity to spend time getting up-to-date, or at least closer to. When up-to-date and in production, there will be work generated daily - anything else would render the project useless. Another thing always on peoples minds: what will happen to the work done? The stats will be publicly available, in two ways: the ESEA full stats site that will be created for that purpose, and as xml download for other stats sites to use. All calculations will have been done for those sites, all they need to do is import the xml data to their database - much less CPU power needed on their servers. This also answers yet another question on peoples minds: it is a non-commercial project.

Message boards

08 Oct 2007, 12:28 (UTC)

Progress news

I have set up some forums at the ESEA message boards - http://www.esea.dk/esea/forum2/ - project forums are at the bottom. These are temporary, though.

New VM

30 Sep 2007, 13:19 (UTC)

Progress news

The Linux virtual machine installation has performed well and I have learned a few things. So much so, that I am currently creating a new virtual machine to host the pre-alpha BOINC server. I will set up temporary message boards some time within the next week - main reason for this is for those of you who know Linux (epecially Ubuntu) to be able to help me with questions I might have about Linux. As I mentioned earlier, I am not too familiar with Linux. You might also have questions about the project, and I would be happy to answer them to the best of my abilities.

Getting familiar

26 Aug 2007, 10:45 (UTC)

Progress news

First steps to get something running. I am installing Ubuntu to get familiar with Linux. The BOINC server will be run on Linux and I plan to have at least Windows and Linux apps.
