The upcomming ESEA NX
I thought I'd tell you a little about the new site. First of all, don't bother trying out the top menu on this page :)
For five years I've been wanting to give the site an all new look, and better functionality. And now, finally, I found a solution that meet my requirements. It should be simple, nice looking, easy to maintain and easy to incorporate new things into.
The NX site is not only about the front end. It's also about the back end. Many will have fought with the availability of most pages. This is due to the updates running in the background, such as and mainly the daily ministats updates. Practically all these updates were made with fighting bottlenecks in mind - creating new ones in the process. Back in the day these new bottlenecks were not a problem, but as the database has grown it's become clear that new measures is needed.
All background updates were programmed using PHP. These will be redone, converted to native windows programmes, using the memory much more and much better. Not only that, they will release connection to the database alot more, making the web site much more accessible. I might even let updates run on a second database installation, making accessibility even better.
New functionality
First stage in the NX/web re-do is to convert everything we keep from the old site. Of this you'll notice a couple of new things: Pages will these gold and silver balls. They provide you with the opportunity to help making the site better in two departments: Suggesting text additions/changes and translating text to other languages. Some translations will already have been made, but made with Googles translation tool, which isn't the greatest for accurate translations.
BOS (the status of BOINC schedulers) will not only be text based, but will automatically update without you having to reload the page.
We'll drop the current message boards - I'm dissatisfied with them, so we'll start out the NX site without any, while I program something that suits our needs and the site better.
Stats will be presented in a very different fasion. I've come up with an idea that will not only make them look nicer, but also load things alot faster. No more need to load everything to see one thing.
More info on the projects. With your help the site will provide more, better and more detailed information on each project, making it easier to decide wether or not to support it.
More information on server actions, and more detail.
After the first stage has been made public, more new things are to come: New message boards, community facilities, improved Account Manager, and a Host Manager. And for the fun, the Grounds. Grounds will be a new way of looking at things, a little game-like. I hope to get some help in the graphics department on this, as I'm not in any way graphics savy.
I hope you will enjoy all the changes and improvements - this was just a little appitizer for what is to come.
